Since Zoraya Zambrano and her children, Gary and Gloria Marmanillo, opened Casa Zoraya back in 2018, this Peruvian spot has been Piedmont’s under-the-radar gem: Ceviches land at the table like works of art, fried calamari adding crunch to a bed of fresh seasonal seafood tossed with a summery leche de tigre. Anticuchos de corazon, beef heart skewers, make for a great starter for a romantic dinner. Arroz chaufa, a Peruvian fried rice dish, gets an upgrade with a passionfruit rocoto sauce, which adds a dose of acidity, sweetness, and peppery zip. And the pisco sours feel like they’re shipped straight from Lima, best sipped on Casa Zoraya’s back patio on nice days. Reservations are available through Resy.

Must-try dish: Don’t skip the picarones: warm, crisp sweet potato doughnuts spiced with clove and cinnamon, then drizzled in molasses.

Chelo

Price range: $$$$

After a few years of pop-ups, chef Luna Contreras finally has a permanent spot for Chelo, the vegetable and masa-forward Mexican concept named after her grandmother. Though details of the menu change according to Contreras’s whims and the seasons, a few staples have emerged: blue corn empanadas bursting with earthy mushrooms and kale, ricotta-stuffed chilaquiles rellenos in zippy mole amarillo, Oaxaca-style tlayudas with peak produce, branzino a la plancha with miso-brothy beans, and a lofty tres leches cake that rotates with the seasons (ours was lightly flavored with matcha and studded with strawberries on a recent visit). Everything is light, playful, and whimsical, with a strong sense of identity — not unlike Contreras herself, who you’ll find on social media as a vocal advocate for trans rights, a big Totoro fan, and a strong proponent of dancing in the kitchen.

Insider tip: Check the dessert menu for whimsical scoops of ice cream and playful paletas.

Mole Mole Mexican Cuisine

Link

Open for: Lunch, dinner

Price range: $$

People flock to this pair of food carts, one on Alberta and another on Mississippi, in pursuit of mole enchiladas, portobello burritos, and bowls of lipstick-red pozole, sipping horchata and fruity aguas frescas. The menu is extensive, with everything from soy curl burritos to quesabirria tacos to cochinita pibil, but it should be no surprise that Mole Mole’s particular specialty is its moles: a sweet and nutty mole negro, an herbaceous and vegetal mole verde, and the rarely-seen-in-Portland pink-toned mole rosa, made with earthy beets and hibiscus flowers. The artful plating — custom colorful ceramic bowls from Mexico, garnished with flowers — is an unexpected touch of refinement for food cart dining, making this one of the city’s best spots for Mexican food. Diners can also call ahead for food to go.

Best for: Days when you want a sit down-style restaurant meal, but the price point and fresh air of a food cart.

Pasar

Link

Open for: Dinner

Price range: $$$

Indonesian food historically hasn’t been well-represented in Portland, but one restaurateur, Feny, is single handedly changing that. In 2019, she opened Wajan, serving hearty rice dishes with fried chicken legs, curried jackfruit, and lacy tapioca crackers. Pasar, which translates to market, opened in 2023. The dining room is decked out with Indonesian-inspired décor, from traditional masks and shadow puppet-style cutouts to the thatched roof above the bar. Pasar serves a shareable, street food-inspired menu that’s also easily adapted for plant-based eaters. Start with the gorengan combo of fried snacks and the rujak serut, a pineapple, papaya, and cucumber salad with spicy tamarind. Can’t-miss mains include lontong cap go meh, coconut broth with chewy rice cakes and succulent chayote, and babi goreng, bites of crispy pork belly. Don’t neglect the sambal portion of the menu, from roasted green chile to sweet tomato chile.

Must-order: This is the only restaurant in Portland where you’ll regularly find kue — small, colorful, and often intricate Indonesian desserts, many made with chewy tapioca and rice flour and lightly sweetened, featuring the likes of jackfruit or pandan.

Lontong Cap Go Meh at Pasar, which is garnished with tempe orek (fried tempeh), rice crackers, chips, a spicy boiled egg, acar (Indonesian pickles), and tofu.

At Urdaneta, husband-and-wife team Javier and Jael Canteras offer their take on Spanish tapas culture through a playful, modern lens. Look for classics like croquetas de jamon, house-made morcilla blood sausage, and beautifully charred pulpo a la brasa. At times, the chefs play with molecular gastronomy and fanciful ingredients made famous at the legendary, now-closed Catalonian restaurant El Bulli — think spherified olives or strawberry gel served atop foie gras ganache. Close out with Basque cheesecake for dessert. The restaurant’s selection of vermouth, sherry, and Basque cider would make any Iberian proud. Book a table here.

Lovely’s Fifty Fifty

Link

Open for: Dinner

Price range: $$$

If someone is defining Portland’s distinct pizza style, it’s Sarah Minnick of Lovely’s Fifty Fifty. Ever-changing pizzas, typically eschewing meat and red sauce, are a garden of edible flowers, seasonal greens, wild mushrooms, and esoteric cheeses atop an airy-but-sturdy pizza dough made with Oregon whole grains. Try the year-round pizza with fermented tomato, carrot, Calabrian chile, and the likes of curly kale or rainbow chard; in summer, stop by for peach, guanciale, shishito, and corn pie. Salads and soups are made with peak-season produce. Pizza is available for dine-in in the casual yet intimate dining room, or to-go. While the menu changes on an almost weekly basis, Minnick’s culinary creativity and attention to detail remains constant.

Must-order dish: A scoop from the ice cream case, from malted milk ball flavor to buckwheat honey toffee.

Cafe Olli

Open for: Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch

Price range: $$$

Northeast MLK’s Cafe Olli features a giant wood-fired oven at its center, tying together the space visually and setting the cozy mood for the hearth-fired food that’s to come. It’s a haven for gorgeous pastries, char-dotted pizzas, and bubbling pastas al forno. Oregon produce plays a major role in dictating the menu, though a few dishes have become beloved constants: the simple breakfast sandwich, featuring a juicy house-made sausage patty and a fluffy milk bun; pizza pomodoro, showcasing the flavor of the hearth as much as the tomato and grain in the dough. Cafe Olli’s charm is in those fleeting seasonal portraits, from springtime green garlic cavatelli to summery beet salad dotted with Rainier cherries. Dessert, such as the restaurant’s famed thick-sliced chocolate cake, is mandatory. Indoor and patio seating is available; the restaurant doesn’t take reservations, but you can order to-go by phone.

Know before you go: Brunch lines can get gnarly and there’s no indoor waiting space, so get there early or be prepared to be patient.

Langbaan

Open for: Dinner

Price range: $$$$

Akkapong Earl Ninsom is the restaurateur behind several stars in Portland’s culinary universe, but Langbaan — his supper club within Northwest Portland’s Phuket Cafe — is the brightest. It’s no wonder Langbaan won the James Beard award for most outstanding restaurant — in the entire country — in 2024. Constantly changing tasting menus pull inspiration from regions, time periods, and styles of dining throughout Thailand’s culinary history, from a deep dive into Bangkok’s Chinatown to a survey of Southern Thai cuisine. But the opening dishes are constants. Jewels of cara cara orange mingle with plump shrimp and peanuts, cradled in a betel leaf with fish sauce caramel; a crispy rice cup supports Hokkaido scallop, coated in a sweet coconut cream. Thoughtful, creative natural wine pairings come from sommelier Dana Frank. Every meal ends with not one, but two desserts from pastry chef Maya Erickson, one of the city’s finest. Make a reservation online.

Vibe check: The gorgeous plating and attentive service are reminiscent of the fine dining of yore, but the experience feels fresh and inventive.

Xiao Ye

Open for: Dinner, weekend brunch

Price range: $$$

Louis Lin and Jolyn Chen serve what they call first-generation American food, drawing from their experiences growing up Taiwanese American and working in restaurants across the country. That means dishes like khao soi radiatori, green curry lamb with pakoras, and whole grilled branzino with Chinese chimichurri find a home at the same table. Once a month on Wednesdays, diners are drawn in for an ephemeral burger special, like jalapeño popper burgers or their take on an In-N-Out double-double. Finish with a flight of housemade gelato, from fior di latte with Okinawan brown sugar to blood orange sorbet. The newly added weekend brunch ranges from Taiwanese rice porridge with pickles and pork floss to a classic diner pancake. Xiao Ye translates to midnight snack, which captures the restaurant’s mission to welcome diners to connect with loved ones and friends over unexpected flavor combinations.

Must-order dishes: Mini madeleines, a menu staple, are fashioned from masa and mochiko and serve as a sweet-savory start to the meal.

This Pearl District spot is equal parts wine bar and restaurant. The kitchen is the domain of longstanding Portland chef Erik Van Kley, a talent with a singular perspective on classic Pacific Northwestern ingredients. One preparation of the ubiquitous early spring English peas and morels here arrives as a pasta with dashi brown butter. All of the food works well with the exceptionally detailed wine list, which includes a few long-cellared options hailing from the Willamette Valley.

Insider tip: The $75 four-course chef’s choice prix fixe is a solid deal for hungry wine drinkers with decision fatigue.

Laurelhurst Market

Link

Open for: Lunch, dinner

Price range: $$$$

When it opened in 2009, East Burnside’s Laurelhurst Market was emblematic of the current state of Portland dining, celebrating whole animal butchery and in-house everything. The market’s butcher shop supplied the restaurant with then-uncommon cuts like coulottes and cured things like bacon and charcuterie. Fifteen years later, Laurelhurst remains a bastion of truly inventive steakhouse fare where each cut of beef gets paired with just the right accompaniments, from steak frites with charred scallion creme fraiche to coulotte with pickled lemon. Traditional steakhouse sides get upgrades here too, with the likes of creamed rapini and grilled asparagus with guanciale and gribiche. At lunchtime, sit on the patio with a reuben and fries, or pick up cold deli sandwiches for a picnic.

Must-order dishes: Visitors should go for the wonderfully intricate (but not overly complicated) starters and salads — perhaps burrata and pickled rhubarb atop beets, or a harvest salad balancing pickle-y acidity with hazelnut romesco.

Jazz plays while pots of pu’erh, mugs of coffee, and glasses of Austrian wine land at tables around this charming, no-reservations French-Scandinavian cafe in downtown Portland, once fawned over by Ruth Reichl herself. Meals at Maurice feel luxurious in their simplicity, thanks to the restaurant’s leisurely pace and minimalist plates. Diners might start with radishes with French butter or scallops in the shell with chamomile, moving on to the smørbrød of the day or a Norwegian yogurt soup with rhubarb and rye berries, and ending with a duck breast or ling cod fillet. Peppery cheesecakes and Meyer lemon pudding cakes are a must for fika, the Swedish tradition of a coffee or tea break with something sweet on the side.

Best for: A long, luxurious lunch with a bottle of wine, followed by a nap — how European.

Luce

Price range: $$$

Going to Luce feels like eating at a trattoria in Italy: no reservations accepted, cheap house wine, modest prices, checkerboard floor interior, a street patio, everything made for sharing. Get the party started with antipasti clocking in at just $3 each, from radicchio suppli to farro pie. Any salad or pasta can be ordered as a half portion, from the must-try octopus, dill, and potato salad to the corzetti, coin-shaped pasta from Liguria with creamy walnut sauce. Mains are all priced at $20, and you’ll find some variation of a pork chop — the best entree on the menu, as far as we’re concerned — plus hanger steak, stuffed trout, and lamb nearly every night. Finish with the silky, subtle buttermilk panna cotta topped with pine bud syrup.

Know if you go: Wait times can be long. Get there toward the earlier or later side, or drink a glass of wine and maybe even have a snack at the restaurant’s brand-new wine bar next door, Bar Martina.

Le Pigeon

Link

Open for: Dinner

Price range: $$$$

In his years at Le Pigeon, chef-owner Gabriel Rucker often molds the casual or unexpected into a fine dining format, from fried chicken to coconut shrimp. More than 15 years after its opening, Le Pigeon is as inventive as ever, thanks in part to the recent appointment of former Canard chef de cuisine Dana Francisco to head chef. A tasting menu might involve courses like beef carpaccio invigorated with habanada peppers and crowned with thinly shaved matsutakes, or sturgeon pastrami circled with a Swiss cheese and caviar sauce. While Rucker has consistently revamped his tasting menus over the years, the finale — a foie gras profiterole — remains a testament to Rucker’s cheeky culinary style.

Know before you go: Vegetarian tasting menus are available, and prepared with equal thought and depth. Omnivores, consider going with a friend, ordering both tasting menus, and sharing.

Nong's Khao Man Gai

Link

Open for: Lunch, dinner

Price range: $$

Nong Poonsukwattana is the stuff of Portland legend: she came from Thailand with two suitcases and $70 in her pocket, working at Pok Pok for a short time before striking out on her own and opening one of the city’s most famous food carts. The original Nong’s Khao Man Gai carts are gone, but two counter-service brick-and-mortar locations are still kicking, serving Poonsukwattana’s signature dish: a deceptively simple, Thai-style take on Hainanese chicken. Ask five acolytes their favorite part of the dish and each will offer a different answer: the soul-satisfying broth, the nubby, delicately flavored rice, Nong’s ginger-heavy sauce, or the poached chicken itself. This is also a staple spot for takeout or delivery.

The sleeper hit on the menu: Herbal soup with chicken wings, thin rice noodles, shiitake mushrooms, daikon, and bitter melon.

Kann

Link

Open for: Dinner

Price range: $$$$

Gregory Gourdet’s reputation within Portland dining was already well-established before he opened his first restaurant — the Top Chef regular and James Beard Award-winning cookbook author was known for his shaved ice-topped desserts and Christmas ducks at Departure for years before he opened this resoundingly lauded Southeast Portland restaurant. Even a couple years after opening, the stylish and energetic Kann is the hottest reservation in town. Groups gather at round tables to share peanut creamed greens, cured kanpachi with a seasonal granita, whole snappers with pineapple and tamarind, and ribeyes rubbed with Haitian coffee. The entire menu happens to be dairy and gluten-free, in alignment with Gourdet’s own dietary needs, but you’d never know it from the dessert menu, with items like pineapple upside down cake with rum raisin ice cream; non-drinkers will also appreciate the lengthy list of NA cocktails.

Before you go: It’s best to plan ahead — reservations often disappear minutes after they drop — but small parties may be able to snag seats at the bar by arriving early.

Price range: $$$$

This downtown Portland Italian restaurant could earn its spot on the map based on hospitality alone, harkening back to an era of dining when servers in ties and vests refilled the water glasses after a sip or two, and warm focaccia landed on tables just a few moments after guests placed orders. The food meets the quality of the service, whether it’s a mound of burrata nestled in ribbons of 500-day prosciutto, or sea scallops with dollops of shallot relish and saffron gel placed over a swipe of Parmesan fonduta. Pastas, from duck ragu linguine to mushroom-ricotta filled tortelli, are made in house with gentle bite and silky texture. Reserve a table here.

Know before you go: Parking here in the heart of downtown can be tough, so arrive a little early or consider taking public transit; many buses stop nearby at Pioneer Courthouse Square.

Bauman’s On Oak

Link

Open for: Dinner

Price range: $$

Eater Portland’s 2024 Best New Restaurant, Bauman’s is first and foremost an all-ages taproom where Christine Walter shows off her cider-making prowess using apples from her family’s century-old farm. But the food menu from Cafe Olli alum Daniel Green is just as special as the two dozen ciders on tap. There are bar snacks that are just a little bit better than they need to be — Ruffles with blue cheese dip, anyone? — but also sensational full meals, like a ham sandwich slathered with miso mayo or black rice with squid. Special events like summertime pizza pop-ups best enjoyed on the patio, plus collab dinners with local chefs, make this a spot to add into the regular rotation.

Insider tip: We tend to prefer the second half of Bauman’s taplist, which leans toward single-varietal ciders like English-style Porter’s Perfection or the tart Crimson Gold crabapple.

Sichuan Taste Chinese Restaurant

Link

Open for: Lunch, dinner

Price range: $$

Portland proper had long been lacking a spot for real-deal, mouth-numbing Sichuan cuisine — until Sichuan Taste, the sister restaurant of Sichuan City in Happy Valley, opened up downtown. Start with the mashed eggplant with century egg and green peppers, which tastes like a spicy, super-umami baba ganoush, and chile oil wontons, which are consistent crowd pleasers. Be sure to order something crispy, like the tingly-spicy Sichuan popcorn chicken or the decadent salted egg yolk fried shrimp. You’ll want something tangy, like shredded potato strips in vinegar or sliced beef with crunchy pickled green beans. And something soupy is essential, whether it’s fish in green Sichuan peppercorn broth or beef in a slightly sweet, pumpkiny golden broth with glass noodles. If you’d prefer to eat at home, you can order to-go or by phone, or order delivery here or here.

Know before you go: Portions are huge, but you’ll want a variety of dishes for a balanced meal — so bring lots of friends and get ready to share.

Restaurateur Nan Chaison is the prolific force behind not just two locations of Norah, but also as an owner at Mestizo, Phaya Thai Express, and Libre. Norah stands out for its plant-based, pan-Asian cuisine that feels like a party, colorful and bursting with spice and acidity. Vegan rangoons, pad thai nachos, and little soy curl larb croquettes atop cucumber slices make for a great opener to a meal, along with a mezcal margarita tinged pink with gochujang. On the main course menu, Chaison roasts a whole head of cauliflower and drapes it in rich red curry, tops fettuccine with silky lemongrass-coconut sauce and seasonal mushrooms, and stir-fries some of the best pad Thai in town. Pair your dinner with a cocktail, like a passion fruit margarita or coconut fat-washed pandan Negroni. Know before you go: While the menus at both locations are similar, the newer Alberta location also offers some exclusive dishes, including Chiang Mai noodle soup specialty khao soi — which is hard enough to find anywhere in town, let alone a vegan version.

Mirisata

Link

Open for: Lunch, dinner

Price range: $$

Mirisata is Portland’s first and only Sri Lankan restaurant, but it also stands out for being fully vegan, one of the few worker-owned cooperative eateries in town, and gratuity-free. Rice and curry served atop a banana leaf is the star dish, with a daily changing offering that includes rice, padam, and four rotating dishes of varying spice levels — on a recent visit, the plate included king oyster mushroom curry, tempered bok choy, deviled pumpkin, and the seeni sambol, caramelized onions coated in tamarind. But the rest of the menu is also worth ordering, from the crispy Impossible beef rolls to the banana blossom and dulse “fish” pastries to the wide-ranging selection of roti, including one stuffed with black “pork” curry and cashew cheese. Order at the counter and eat inside, dine at the patio picnic tables, or order takeout or delivery.

Insider tip: Portland’s late-night food offerings are slim, but Mirisata is open until midnight Friday through Sunday.

Kachka

Link

Open for: Lunch, dinner

Price range: $$$$

It’s hard to overstate how influential this Buckman restaurant is: When Bonnie and Israel Morales opened Kachka in 2014, it ushered in the great Eastern European culinary renaissance, as restaurants around the country popped up celebrating the cuisines of the former Soviet republics. The iconic herring under a fur coat is a staple here, a colorful layered salad of pickled herring, beets, potatoes, and carrots; so are the dumplings, from beefy Siberian pelmeni to Ukrainian sour cherry vareniki. For mains, go for tender rabbit in a clay pot, swimming in a braising liquid of cherries, porcini, and garlic. Drinkers should opt for a few pours of the restaurant’s fun vodkas infused with the likes of sea buckthorn or horseradish, available in flights or single pours. The house rassol — pickle juice — is the ultimate back to any savory vodka here.

Insider tip: Lunch offers some of the same hits as the dinner menu, including dumplings and herring under a fur coat, with some fun additions like a tongue pastrami sandwich and cabbage roll-inspired sub.

Bake On The Run

Link

Open for: Lunch, dinner

Price range: $$

At Bake on the Run, mother-son duo Bibi and Mike Singh celebrate the cuisine of Guyana, underrepresented not only in Portland’s restaurant scene but also in the country. Here, the Singhs emphasize the culinary influences on the South American country — particularly the Indian and Chinese influences — with dishes like a creamy house dal and chow mein made with imported Guyanese noodles. But the true draw of this cart is its namesake bakes. Fluffy, slightly sweet pockets of fried dough arrive filled with everything from salt cod to Nutella. The bake stuffed with chana aloo, where layers of garlic and ginger intermingle with Guyanese curry powder and tender chickpeas and potatoes, is Portland food cart dining at its finest. Located at The Heist pod in Southeast’s Woodstock neighborhood, there are plenty of indoor and outdoor seating options, and to-go is also available by phone.

The sleeper hit on the menu: Once you’ve tried the essential bake, go for the chicken and potato curry over rice — Mike’s favorite.

This 12-seat sushi counter has become nationally acclaimed for Edomae-style sushi: delicate, often cured slivers of fish, potent and pristine in flavor and texture. The chefs here introduced so many nuances of each fish that would often be lost at other restaurants. Lightly cold-smoked, salt and vinegar-cured saba is salty and sweet and smoky. Hotate from Northwestern Japan gets a spritz of yuzu, its perfume-y citrus complementing the creaminess of the scallop. Outside the world of seafood, A5 wagyu is hit with a hand torch so the fat renders silken, but doesn’t cook; the result is a delicate, decadent bite of beef that’s hard to forget. The restaurant’s main draw is the fixed-price omakase, but a la carte is also available. Make a reservation here.

Know before you go: The omakase is a real treat, but hungry diners will probably want to order additional pieces of nigiri a la carte.

At this modern French restaurant, servers flit from room to room on the top floor of a converted 115-year-old house delivering glasses of melon de Bourgogne and frilly rosettes of tête de moine cheese accompanied by bee pollen and honeyed hazelnuts. The restaurant’s stately-yet-homey rooms are the domain of chef Joel Stocks, formerly of fine dining destination Holdfast. Silky chicken liver mousse tartlets topped with seasonal jam are baked in limited quantities, but make for a lovely sweet-savory open to the meal. The focal points of main dishes — from mushroom crepes to casarecce with preserved lemon, and proteins like duck confit and sturgeon — remain the same, but ingredients change on the plates seasonally, highlighting produce from spring onions to chanterelles.

Know before you go: Vegetarian options on the menu are limited, and vegan dishes are few to nonexistent.

Rangoon Bistro

Link

Open for: Dinner, Friday and weekend lunch

Price range: $$

From its days as a food stand to its current two-restaurant operation, Rangoon Bistro has held fast to using farmers market produce throughout its menu. Thokes, Burmese salads, arrive in a satisfying, crunchy jumble of ingredients including fermented tea leaves, fried fava beans, pickled ginger, and shredded cabbage. David Sai, Alex Saw, and Nick Sherbo, the three friends behind the restaurant, anchor the menu with warming curries and tangles of noodles with different preparations — maybe draped in chickpea tofu sauce, tossed in tamari, or wok-fried with pork. Malaysian-style fried chicken served with coconut rice and belacan pays homage to Sai and Saw’s time living and working in the Southeast Asian country. Both locations have indoor and patio seating, and their food is also available to-go or for delivery.

Must-order item: sweet and salty coconut milk over ice.

Akadi

Link

Open for: Dinner

Price range: $$$

Originally hailing from Cote d’Ivoire, chef Fatou Ouattara has become the city’s unofficial ambassador of West African cuisine. In a dining room lined with West African art, diners tear apart suya-rubbed wings and snack on fried sweet plantains, slathering them with Ouattara’s signature garlicky, gingery, tomatoey dipping sauce, also available in bottles to go. Opt for a whole fried fish, a heaping plate of jollof rice with your choice of protein, or a rich stew, from tomatoey lamb to slick okra. Book a table online.

Insider tip: Pair the fried fish with a side of attieke, a fluffy, couscous-like dish made from fermented grated cassava that’s popular in Cote d’Ivoire.

Excellent Cuisine Chinese Food Restaurant

Link

Open for: Brunch, lunch, dinner

Price range: $$

The legacy of the space now home to Excellent Cuisine is a hard one to live up to; Wong’s King’s status as Chinese food royalty in Portland is well known. But the piping hot, delicately folded dim sum here may supersede its predecessor, as the bustling crowds of weekend morning dim sum goers might suggest. Wrappers of har gow retain the right spring, teeth ripping through to a core of juicy shrimp; the siu mai is pork-heavy and springy, with an al dente wrapper. The standout dish is the red rice rolls: satisfyingly chewy on the outside, crisp on the inside, with a core of bouncy, flavorful shrimp. Pineapple buns stuffed with hot, lava-like salted egg yolk custard and jiggling mango pudding set in duckling-shaped molds make for a fine finish. By night, Excellent Cuisine turns into a classic Cantonese banquet hall, with everything from live seafood to cozy clay pots. You can also grab dim sum , or order delivery here or here.

Know before you go: The red rice rolls can be hard to snag, so flag down a server to order them instead of trying to grab them from a cart.

Oma's Hideaway

Open for: Dinner

Price range: $$$

Going to this Malaysian-fusion-meets-stoner-food restaurant always feels like a party, from the first popping boba Jell-O shot. In a funky dining room decked out in marine wallpaper or at a sidewalk table, diners dunk impossibly flaky roti canai in silky corn curry, dip fries into salted egg yolk sauce and sambal ketchup, and sip cocktails that might feature pineapple-chai spiced rum or gin with salted longan. The true move here is to order anything out of the charcoal oven, in particular the succulent, lacquered char siu coppa glazed with cherry cola, the star of the wonton mee.

Sleeper hit on the menu: On a recent visit, caramelized Brussels sprouts with Cracker Jack-inspired crunchy sorghum, crisp anchovies, peanuts, chile jam, and fried shallot reignited our love for the cruciferous vegetable.

On a red tablecloth, a pile of sweetbreads topped with an egg, a stir-fry of vegetables, a burger, and a cocktail all sit at Oma’s Hideaway.

Magna Kusina

Link

Open for: Lunch, dinner

Price range: $$$

When the highly anticipated Filipino restaurant Magna opened in 2019, it was a great restaurant, one that got better every visit with homey bowls of pancit bihon and calamansi-scented sisig, still sizzling when it arrived at the table. But it seems that chef and owner Carlo Lamagna reaches a new level each time his restaurant passes an anniversary, not just as a chef but as a community leader — whether it’s organizing a fundraiser, serving as a mentor for a young chef, or hosting a pop-up. Magna holds space for both the supremely casual and the festive, whether it’s a skewer of charcoal-grilled pork intestines or silky squid ink noodles with just enough bite, coated in a beautiful crab fat sauce. Lunch at Magna is an exploration of impeccably executed comfort foods, including rice plates, pancit, and brothy sinigang.

Must-order dish: Sisig with bits of crispy and juicy pork, served on a sizzling platter with runny fried egg.

Jacqueline

Link

Open for: Dinner

Price range: $$$

When Jacqueline opened on Southeast Clinton, it slowly became known as a Pacific Northwestern seafood restaurant, a place for $1 happy hour oysters and Dungeness crab toast. However, this restaurant, which recently moved a few doors down on Clinton to a larger space, is far more than its blockbusters. Begin with a flurry of raw dishes like hamachi crudo, matched with the caramelized char of grilled pickled pineapple and the salty fermented fish funk of mam nem. From there, lean into vegetables like smashed cucumbers with Oregon dulse and whipped tofu, or grilled little gem green goddess salad. Or go for a seafood main like a cedar plank whole trout or halibut with morels and pickled ramps. The restaurant’s family-style tasting menu, at $90 per person, is worth every cent. Make reservations here.

Know before you go: For best chances at happy hour oysters, book a table a few weeks in advance or get there early to wait in line.

Bình Minh Sandwiches

Link

Open for: Breakfast and lunch

Price range: $

Look no further than Binh Minh for the best banh mi in town. The key here is the house-baked bread, which combines the soft fluff of white bread with the crisp, lightly flaky shatter of a French baguette. But the rest of the components are well thought-out, too, particularly in the classic #1 combo, which layers ham, head cheese, rich pate, and super-silky eggy mayo with a generous portion of herbs and pickled veggies. (It never hurts to request extra mayo, though — and you can even take a container of the house-made stuff home.) This little bakery and deli is also home to some of the best beef stew in town, a small bowl sided by a plain banh mi for dipping. The counter is filled with grab-and-go delights like tender banh cuon, tapioca dumplings, crisp pate chaud, and pandan honeycomb cake for dessert. There’s a small dine-in area, but you can also order takeout at the counter or call ahead.

Best for: Picking up sandwiches and snacks for sustenance on a hike, or an unbeatable picnic at Mount Tabor.

Rose VL Deli

Link

Open for: Breakfast, lunch

Price range: $$

Tucked into a mini strip mall on Southeast Powell, Rose VL is the cheerful companion restaurant to 2024 James Beard semifinalist Ha VL, serving traditional Vietnamese soups with unending depth. Two to three different soups are served daily from 8:30 a.m. until sold out, along with brace-yourself strong Vietnamese iced coffee. Portlanders often flock on Saturday for cao lầu, a regional Vietnamese noodle dish with herbs and a tangy, savory sauce that’s rarely seen outside of its home of Hoi An. Soup is also available to-go by phone, or for delivery here or here. It is simply impossible to go wrong, regardless of the soups available any given day.

Sleeper hit: Though cao lau is often the first noodle soup to sell out on Saturdays, mi quang is also available that day and is equally worth the trip, with firm turmeric noodles and rich, ground pork-filled broth.

Bun Bo Hue Restaurant

Link

Open for: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Price range: $$

This Lents restaurant is aptly named after its knockout bun bo hue — spicy beef noodle soup hailing from Hue in central Vietnam. The broth is a complex meaty, shrimpy, lemongrassy delight, loaded with collagen-heavy cuts of beef and pork, layered with slices of Vietnamese ham and jiggly pork blood cubes, and bulked up with chewy, slippery round rice noodles. But the garnishes are what really bring the soup to life: shredded banana blossoms, heaps of basil and mint, lime, and both spicy and vinegary condiments. Dine in, or call for takeout.

Hot tip: Bun bo hue is good for any time of day; it’s a must for hungover mornings and wintery Portland evenings alike.

It’s easy to miss this Honduran cart on SE 82nd, just a few blocks from the southernmost edge of Portland city limits. But those in the know come here for warm baleadas — thick, fluffy homemade flour tortillas stuffed with mashed red beans, avocado, scrambled egg, crema, crumbly cheese, and optional carne asada. But don’t overlook the pollo con tajadas, some of the best fried chicken in town paired with pink pickled onions, thin-sliced fried green plantains, and a mayo-laden shredded cabbage salad. Eat at the cart’s covered picnic tables, or call for take out or get delivery.

OK Omens

Link

Open for: Dinner

Price range: $$$$

There are plenty of great places to drink wine in Portland, but OK Omens rises to the top thanks to its duo of intriguing, playful food and drink menus. Sommelier Brent Braun’s Riesling-focused wine list features deep-cut German Rieslings rarely seen anywhere else in the country, as well as Rieslings with a decade or more of age on them. But there’s no pretense here; a recent tasting note read “tastes like a spa day for lizards: cactus facials, peach steam, and a plunge pool filled with frozen lime curd.” In 2025, the restaurant welcomed chef Joseph Papas, whose seafood-heavy menu hones in on Pacific Northwest essentials like Dungeness crab endive salad dressed in its own fat, or kelp-cured rainbow trout toast with grated horseradish. Like the wine list, dinner offerings also run the high-low gamut with offerings like a brisket burger, Szechuan peppercorn fried chicken, and a beef tallow cruller for dessert.

Insider tip: The daily happy hour from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. serves up some of the sweetest oysters in town at $1 each, plus lightly pickled mussels en escabeche, glass pours for as little as $9, and 25 percent off a selection of riesling bottles.

Astera

Link

Open for: Dinner

Price range: $$$$

Chef Aaron Adams has experimented with a few different identities as a plant-based chef on this block of Belmont, from tempeh burgers and beet Reubens at Fermenter to communal fine dining tasting menus at Farm Spirit. Those restaurants and a couple other short-lived concepts are gone now, but Astera feels like it’s here to stay. This tasting-menu fine dining spot emphasizes local ingredients and in-house fermented vegan yogurts and cheeses, starting at $95; higher price points include foraged plants and mushrooms. Dinner might open with a trio of savory-sweet bites, like a tiny tomato meringue or beet tartare served in a thin crepe cone. Visuals are key here, each dish carefully composed with color and texture, accented by tuiles or leek ash. Dishes might involve a healthy dose of theatrics, like a tomato consomme served in a gold-and-glass teapot, accompanied by fig leaf oil and olive oil in vessels reminiscent of potion vials. Pair your meal with wines from the Oregon- and France-focused list, or go with a non-alcoholic accompaniment. Make reservations on Tock.

Insider tip: Dessert fans, rejoice! Along with a heftier dessert like a berry cobbler, you might also get bites like a trio of mignardises including a frozen chamomile parfait and a tiny strawberry stroopwafel.
